สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ทรงมีพระนามเดิมว่า หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ กิติยากร ซึ่งพระนาม “สิริกิติ์” ได้รับพระราชทานจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มีความหมายว่า “ผู้เป็นศรีแห่งกิติยากร” พระราชสมภพเมื่อวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2475 วันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2499 อันเป็นปีที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมีพระราชประสงค์จะผนวชเป็นพระภิกษุ ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ แต่งตั้งสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีเป็นผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ในระหว่างที่ผนวชและทรงพระราชดำริว่า สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีได้ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ในระหว่างที่ผนวช และได้ปฏิบัติพระราชภารกิจแทนพระองค์ด้วยพระปรีชาสามารถ สนองพระราชประสงค์เป็นที่เรียบร้อย จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เฉลิมพระนามาภิไธย สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีว่าสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ
วันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2562 พระบาทสมเด็จพระวชิรเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมเฉลิมพระนามาภิไธยว่า “สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง” ดังปรากฏเนื้อความในประกาศเฉลิมพระนามาภิไธยว่า “…โดยที่ทรงพระราชดำริด้วยพระราชหฤทัยประกอบด้วยพระกตัญญูกตเวทิตา ระลึกถึงพระเดชพระคุณสมเด็จพระบรมราชชนนี อันได้มีมาเป็นล้นพ้นยิ่งกว่าผู้อื่น และทรงพระราชดำริว่า พระบรมราชชนนีเป็นผู้ทรงพระคุณอันประเสริฐ ได้ทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกรณียกิจอันได้บังเกิดประโยชน์แก่ชาติบ้านเมืองและพสกนิกรเป็นอเนกปริยาย มีพระราชหฤทัยเปี่ยมด้วยพระเมตตากรุณาธิคุณ เสด็จออกสอดส่องดูแลทุกข์สุขของราษฎรทั่วทุกแห่งหนแม้ในพื้นที่ห่างไกลทุรกันดาร ด้วยพระวิริยอุตสาหะอย่างยิ่งยวด โดยทรงดำเนินพระราชจริยวัตรด้วยพระราชปณิธานแห่งธรรมราชินี ในศุภสมัยอันเป็นมหามงคลพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกนี้ สมควรจะเฉลิมพระเกียรติยศสนองพระคุณตามโบราณราชประเพณี อันจะอำนวยสิริสวัสดิ์พิพัฒนมงคลแด่พระองค์ และสยามรัฐสีมาอาณาจักร จึงมีพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมให้เฉลิมพระนามาภิไธย สมเด็จพระบรมราชชนนี ตามที่จารึกในพระสุพรรณบัฏว่า สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง…”
พระราชกรณียกิจที่สำคัญ
ด้านศิลปาชีพ ในขณะที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่9 ทรงริเริ่มก่อตั้งโครงการหลวงต่างๆ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินินาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง จึงทรงริเริ่มโครงการให้ราษฎรโดยเฉพาะชาวนาในท้องถิ่นชนบททำอาชีพเสริมโดยใช้เวลาว่างจากการทำนาทำไร่มาทำงานศิลปาชีพ จนราษฎรเหล่านั้นมีความรู้ความสามารถในงานผลิต งานศิลปหัตถกรรม จนเป็นที่ยอมรับในประเทศไทยและระดับสากล
ด้านความมั่นคงของชาติ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินินาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ทรงห่วงใยความมั่นคงของชาติและทรงปฏิบัติพระราชกรณียกิจทุกวิถีทางที่จะช่วยทะนุบำรุงและปกป้องรักประเทศชาติ ทรงพระกรุณาเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเยี่ยมทหาร ตำรวจ ราษฎรอาสาสมัคร จนถึงฐานปฏิบัติการ ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในพื้นที่อันตรายเพียงใดก็ตามได้พระราชทานถุงของขวัญประกอบด้วยเครื่องอุปโภคบริโภคที่จำเป็น เพื่อพระราชทานกำลังใจแก่ผู้ปฏิบัติงานด้านความมั่นคงของชาติตลอดมา
ด้านการสาธารณสุข ในด้านการสาธารณสุข นอกจากทรงช่วยเหลือผู้ที่ได้รับความเดือดร้อนโดยจัด “หน่วยแพทย์พระราชทาน” ตามเสด็จไปรักษาพยาบาลราษฎรในถิ่นทุรกันดารแล้ว ยังทรงช่วยเหลือกลุ่มผู้ประสบภัยธรรมชาติ ทรงช่วยเหลือทหาร ตำรวจ และราษฎรอาสาสมัครตามชายแดน ทรงริเริ่มจัดตั้งมูลนิธิสายใจไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ในกรณีที่ทรงพบราษฎรเจ็บป่วยก็จะทรงรับไว้เป็นคนไข้ในพระบรมราชานุเคราะห์ ทรงอุปถัมภ์องค์กรการกุศล สมาคม มูลนิธิต่างๆ เป็นจำนวนมาก
ด้านการส่งเสริมอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติ พระทรงมีพระราชดำริให้จัดตั้ง “โครงการป่ารักน้ำ” ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ราษฎรมีส่วนร่วมในการร่วมกันปลูกป่า หลังจากนั้นยังมีโครงการตามพระราชดำริที่ปรากฏขึ้นเพื่อส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติ อาทิ โครงการสวนสัตว์ป่าเปิดภูเขียวตาม
